(CLARENCE) The Red Devils wrapped up their 2007 season with a disappointing loss to the Williamsville North Spartans by the score of 10 to 5. The game marked the first-ever home playoff for Clarence, and was the first contest played on the high school football field. The exciting atmosphere brought out a large contingent of spectators from both sides. Clarence battled the visitors toe-to-toe for much of the first half. However, North would slowly pull away in the second, shutting down the Red Devil offense and running away with the well-earned victory. The defeat could not take away from a outstanding regular season, which saw the Clarence lacrosse program "rise up" as a legitimate contenders in the tough Class A division. The Red Devils finished a best-ever #12 ranking in the LaxPower poll rankings in Section 6. Several players made all-league honors; Caleb Higgins and John Syty both earned honorable mention ECIC, Dan Barron and Ryan Duff both made the 2nd team All-ECIC this season, making the first team All-ECIC list was Nick Robinson and Jordan Collins-Hartwig. All the honors were well deserved, and reflect how far Red Devil lacrosse has come in the past couple seasons under head coach Mike Silverstein. The Devils matched their 2006 win-loss record of 11-8. However, the victories earned during 2007 were much more rewarding. Clarence weathered a difficult non-league schedule, opening at Amherst and posting just a 1-3 record after their first 4 games. However, these tough lessons would pay dividends as the season progressed. After a mid season loss to Frontier, the Red Devils went on a six game winning streak before meeting up with Class A champion Orchard Park. The season was highlighted by a couple big wins against Williamsville North, and our first-ever victories over both Sweet Home and Nichols. Perhaps the biggest strength of the 2007 season was the commitment of many on the team to accept roles which were critical to team success. The future looks bright for Clarence Lacrosse as a strong contingent of this year's team will be back next season. However, we will miss our senior players as they move on to take on new challenges after high school. Jeff Smith was an unsung hero on the 2007 squad. Serving as the backup goalie, Jeff played quite a bit throughout and made some critical saves when Ryan Duff was serving time in the penalty box. Jeff was a true "team player" in every sense of the word, sacrificing for the good of the squad, and always their to emotionally charge the Clarence sidelines. Captain John Syty led by example throughout the season and was one of the foundations for our success. Syty was most effective in big games and against the tougher opponents on the schedule. He could always find a way to use his strength and athletic ability to open up opportunities for the Red Devil offense. Captain Nick Robinson will be greatly missed next season. It will be a difficult task to fill his shoes as the Red Devils "shutdown" defenseman. His skill and steady play were often times taken for granted, as we expected that he would win every one on one battles he faced. Shutting down the best attackman in WNY is a difficult task. His level of play set the mark for future D-poles to follow. Both John and Nick recently played in the Exceptional Senior All-Star Game representing Clarence Lacrosse with class and dignity. Both players brought their "A" game, and were impressive among the best lacrosse talent that WNY has to offer. The page has turned. The summer leagues and tournaments now begin to get the team ready for the challenges of the 2008 season. The Lacrosse Revolution has taken firm hold in Clarence, and high hopes for future success are now passed on to the younger players coming up through the program. As they say, "To be the best, you've gotta beat the best", the next step will require a stronger commitment from us all. Congratulations guys on a great season! |
